ANNOUNCEMENTS

CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader:  God is revealed not to the person who is self-
              sufficient or self-righteous,
People: But to the one whose mind is open, whose
              will is receptive, and whose soul is humble.
ALL: In that spirit, let us come in worship before the
         Lord.

INVOCATION                                         Rev. Mason
* HYMN      “Just As I Am”                              # 442

* PRAYER OF CONFESSION               (UNISON)
Eternal God, You have set forth the way of life for us in Jesus of Nazareth.  We confess that we have been slow to learn from his example.  You have spoken to us and called us, and we have not followed.  Your beauty has been expressed in the world around us, and we have been blind.  You have stretched out Your hands to us through our brothers and sisters, and we have passed by.  We have taken great benefit with little thanks.  We have been unworthy of Your self-giving love. Forgive us, O God, and grant that we may be more faithful and constant in our love and service. Amen.

*Assurance of Pardon
*Response – Gloria Patri  (Hymnal page 581)

Scripture reading          Luke 18: 9-14
The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector
9 To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’

13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’

14 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
                L: The Word of the Lord
                P: Thanks be to God!
