Mission Statement
We the members of the North Buffalo Presbyterian Church understand that God has bound us together spiritually as the body of Jesus Christ. We understand that God has called us to be Christ's church, to represent God in the world and carry God's reconciling work and message to the world. In response to God's love and care, we have committed ourselves to carrying that mission by:
- Honoring and praising God in our worship
- Proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ and reaching out to others with the good news
- Teaching the Scriptures and Christian ideas and devoting ourselves to personal study and prayer
- Providing fertile ground where people's relationships to God can grow and where talents are recognized and put to use in the work of the kingdom
- Living as examples of Jesus Christ and glorifying God through our lives
- Caring for each other and providing opportunities for fellowship
- Reaching out to our community and our world through our service and stewardship of our resources

Sunday Evening Lenten Series
Sundays at 4 pm
Lent challenges us to consider a different pace -- slowing down, pausing, and noticing. This is not the pace our dominant culture values. Again this year the Presbytery's congregations of the Rt. 844 Corridor invite you to slow down and spend time with the Psalms, as six congregations and their pastors will offer Sunday afternoon Lenten worship opportunities for you. Each pastor's message will be drawn from the Psalms, and will encourage you toward thoughtful and reflective meditation during this season of Lent. Of course, connecting with your neighbors from other congregations will be a highlight as well; fellowship and refreshments will be available following each worship service.
February 18 at Upper Buffalo Presbyterian with Rev. Dr. Jerome Creach
February 25 at North Buffalo U.P. Church with Rev. Jim Farrer
March 3 at Claysville U.P. with Rev. Terry Lucarelli
March 10 at Grove U.P. with Pastor Cynthia Smith
March 17 at West Alexander Presbyterian with Rev. Clayton LaPosta
March 24 at Fourth Presbyterian with Rev. David Mason

From Pastor Clayton's Journal Week of 3/4/24
If you've followed this short blog, you'll know that last week we saw how Israel mourned the thought of beginning a journey into Canaan without the Lord by their side. Angels would clear the way but without the loving friendship of God, you might as well head back to Egypt. Fast forward to Numbers 14 and it seems like God has forgiven Israel (even though they just got done complaining about the menu God has provided) and it is now time to head into that promised land. The cloud of smoke has moved, it's time for the people to move.
Before all the people head out of the camp though, as one final precaution they send a number of men into the land ahead to get a feel for what they're up against. All but 2 of the men return and the report they give is not great. They see the enemies ahead and the great warriors that they would have to face and they don't see how Israel would stand much of a chance. And once again, the people are in panic. They say "let's choose another leader who won't lead us to our slaughter and head back to Egypt. At least we had fish and garlic to eat there!" There is however 2 men that give a different perspective. Joshua and Caleb. They saw the same things and enemies that the other men reported but they give a different report. They aren't naive to threat ahead but they say, "do not rebel against the LORD. Do not fear the people of the land. The LORD is with us." You see, Joshua and Caleb understand the situation differently than these other fearful men. Sure, what lies ahead is scary. In almost every way, Israel is outnumbered. But, the LORD has promised this to his people and goes with them. They don't know the specifics of how this will all play out but they trust the LORD will accomplish his will. And this isn't all that surprising because Joshua's (who will later replace Moses as the leader of Israel) name יהןשצ means, "the Lord saves." The people hear of Joshua's trust in the LORD to save them, and they want to stone him to death. All the while, the LORD says, "how long will these people despise me? How long will they not believe in me? Trust me? After all that I have done?" Fast forward, and from that some root name Joshua we get the name Jesus. And surprise surprise, he teaches a similar message. The LORD saves! Salvation is here, in Jesus! And the response of the people then was the exact same as it was in Numbers 14. We need to kill the man who speaks of trusting in the LORD to be saved. Because of the curse of sin, there is something in all of us that by nature responds in the same way. We want nothing to do with God. We want to shut down any kind of message that tells us we need saved and a Savior has come. But the message remains true. We do need saved, and the LORD saves! So for those in Christ, cling to the message of Joshua and Jesus. Don't be afraid of what comes ahead. The LORD saves you! Through the friendship and love of God, there is nothing in your future that you can't endure. The LORD will save you through it all. And for those who don't know this Savior, put down your stones and trust that through faith we are saved. |
