CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Come into this sacred space to worship God.
People: God of mystery, in you I trust; never let me be ashamed.
Leader: Come into this sacred space to worship God.
People: Be to me a rock for dwelling in, a secure place for retreating to, time and time again; a rock for my restoration.
Leader: Come into this sacred space to worship God.
People: Sustain me against the hand of the unjust and the ruthless.
Leader: Come into this sacred space to worship God.
People: For you are my hope, my trust since my early years. I have relied on you from the womb; from my birth you have sustained me. In you is my wonder again and again and again.

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison) We confess without reservation that too often, we ask without listening, complain without offering thanksgiving. We pray, and cannot understand why we get no response. Awaken us to wonder: If you called, would we answer? Or would you get a busy signal? Would you leave a message, and get no answer in return? We confess anew our impatience and our unwillingness to sit in the holy stillness of your presence. Forgive us, loving God. Thank you for letting us try again. In this minute of silence, let us be still and listen to what you would say to us this day. AMEN

Assurance of Pardon
*Time of silent prayer.
*Passing the Peace
L: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
P: And also, with you.

CHOIR ANTHEM Just a Little Talk with Jesus

Prayer for Illumination
Scripture reading LUKE 4: 21-30
21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

22 All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.

23 Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.’”

24 “Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown. 25 I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land. 26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon. 27 And there were many in Israel with leprosy in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.”

28 All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. 29 They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. 30 But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.
L: The Word of the Lord
P: Thanks be to God!
