HYMN:                             “Jesus, Lover of My Soul”                                     #222
CALL TO CONFESSION
Our faith calls us to break down walls and to live our lives courageously so that others might know who we are by our love. For the times when we have been less than faithful, we offer now our prayer of confession:

PRAYER OF CONFESSION                                                                          (UNISON)
O God, we confess that we would like the road map of our life laid out before us. We want to know where we are going. Any unexpected twists and turns disconcert us. When we hear you calling us to a task we do not want to do or a road we do not want to take, we argue and construct reasons why we cannot.  Forgive the rationalizations we present to you as reasons, the resistance that is most often grounded in fear and unbelief. Forgive our reliance on ourselves and our lack of trust in you, the willfulness that turns away from your will for our lives and the refusal to hear and believe your assurance of the journey. Forgive us all that is past, and free us to a new and living faith in you, through Christ our risen Lord, AMEN.
*Time of silent prayer.
Assurance of Pardon
Our God is a God of love and mercy, who allows us always to begin again. By God's grace, we are forgiven to walk in newness of life. Thanks be to God. Amen.

*Passing the Peace
L: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
P: And also, with you.

Prayer of Illumination
Scripture Lesson:                                  MARK 7: 1-8, 14-15, 21-23
Mark 7:1-8
That Which Defiles
7 The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus 2 and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. 3 (The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders. 4 When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.)
5 So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with defiled hands?”
6 He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:
“‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
7 They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.’
8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”

Mark 7:14-15
14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. 15 Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.”

Mark 7:21-23
21 For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”

Benediction:
As the Father has loved you, go now and love. As the Son has forgiven and redeemed you, go now, extending grace to all you meet.
