Gathering Around the Word
Prelude Music Director Robert Senay ANNOUNCEMENTS CHORAL INTROIT: “Somebody’s knockin’” CALL TO WORSHIP: Responsive Reading Psalm 14 The Lord looks down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there are any, who understand, who seek God. They have all turned aside, they have together become corrupt: There is none who does good. No, not one. INVOCATION HYMN: “The Churches One Foundation” 547
PRAYER OF CONFESSION: (in unison)
Gracious God, we want to be inheritors of your kingdom, to receive the spiritual riches promised by Your Son, Jesus Christ. Yet we feign righteousness while retaining a murder’s heart and a thieves’ itching desire for our neighbor’s goods. From the flood to the Tower of Babel, to the crucifixion of Your Son, we have determined to take heaven by force, treading under our feet the instruction to love our neighbor and to most of all, to love You. As violators of Your will, we still hope to avoid correction and continue in destructive behavior, unhumbled, unreformed, and unrepentant. Dear Father, write the love of Christ in our hearts, etch Your righteousness on our souls lest we die. In our moments of honest reflection, we realize how often we fall short of our goals to follow you. In that knowledge, let us confess our shortcomings to God. Time of Silent Prayer ASSURANCE OF PARDON: From Romans 10: 9 If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved (and pardoned) words mine. Rejoice! In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God! Gloria Patri *Passing the Peace L: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. P: And also, with you. PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION CHILDREN’S CHAT CHOIR ANTHEM Scripture reading 2 Corinthians 11: 22-33 22 Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they Abraham’s descendants? So am I. 23 Are they servants of Christ? (I am out of my mind to talk like this.) I am more. I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again. 24 Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was pelted with stones, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, 26 I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers. 27 I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked. 28 Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches. 29 Who is weak, and I do not feel weak? Who is led into sin, and I do not inwardly burn?
