* PRAYER OF CONFESSION (UNISON) Gracious God, the disciples left all they had to follow the long-awaited Messiah. You promised them hardship, rejection, a loss of comfort, hostility, suffering and finally, a cross to carry. We worry when we cannot see where You are leading; we question “why” when suffering comes; and ignore the parts of the gospel that disrupt our sense of security. Forgive us, Lord. Forgive our selfish desire to have it both ways - to follow but at no cost; to claim You but not risk anything on Your behalf; to embrace new life without experiencing the garden of Gethsemane. Remind us that we live not for ourselves but for the world, in Your stead. By the power of Your Spirit, help us be Your disciples in the word and deed. Amen * Time of silent prayer *Assurance of Pardon *Response – Gloria Patri (Hymnal page 581) *Passing the Peace L: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. P: And also, with you. First Sunday of Advent
Prelude Music Director Bob Senay ANNOUNCEMENTS: Advent candle lighters: Garnet & Christine Welling CALL TO WORSHIP: from Psalm 18 The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer. My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. The Lord is my shield and the horn of my salvation. I call to the Lord who is worthy of praise. In my distress I called to the Lord, I cried to my God for help. From His temple He heard my voice; my cry came into His ears. Smoke rose from His nostrils; consuming fire came from His Mouth, burning coals blazed out of it. He reached down from on high and took hold of me. He drew me out of the deep waters—He rescued me. The Lord rescued me because He delighted in me. The Lord dealt with me according to my righteousness.
INVOCATION: Dr. Domske

It seems ludicrous that we love ourselves more than we love You. Yet we do. We sin. We look for our own self-interests first, long before we look out for our neighbors or especially You. Save us from ourselves, O God. Forgive us for our short-sighted attitudes of sin. We are sorry we have failed You. Put us back into Your arms, where we belong. * Time of silent prayer *ASSURANCE OF PARDON *Response – Gloria Patri (Page 581) *Passing the peace L: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Father in heaven, king of glory, we adore your name and work to glorify you forever. It is through your will that we are alive and healthy today. Your Grace has allowed us to converge together. You have promised that whenever we call on your name, you will hear and answer us. Come into our midst, God, and have fellowship with us. Make your blessings abundant and grace us with your presence. From the start of this meeting to the end, glorify yourself and accept our prayers. Amen.
This week's lesson is on John 14:15-29.

God, we’re so grateful to be able to meet here together and be in your presence today.
We know it’s a gift. Help us never lose sight of that. While we’re here together studying Your Word we ask that You’d open our ears and our hearts to whatever it is You are wanting to teach us. Help us to see things through Your eyes and not the lens of our own understanding. We want to know You more, God. Thank you for showing us who You are and helping us understand and walk in Your love. What we learn today we want to act on. Don’t let it become mere head knowledge. Shape our minds, hearts, and actions according to Your word. Show us how to honor you and love others well with what we learn. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
This week's lesson is on John 11:17-27, 38-44.
Good morning!
We're so glad you decided to join us today!
This morning, the children are having their Vacation Bible School program, so we will not be meeting in person. However, we invite you to watch their program, and read this lesson.
As we are not meeting in person, take some time to think about your past week. If you have any joys, concerns, or prayer requests you would like to share, you can comment on this post. When you are ready, use the prayer below (source) to get started.
Lord,
Lead us from death to life, From falsehood to truth. Lead us from despair to hope, from fear to trust. Let peace fill our hearts, our world and our universe. Let us dream together, pray together and work together, To build one world of peace and justice for all. Amen.
This week's lesson is on John 12:44-50.
Good morning!
We are so glad you decided to join us today!
When we meet together in person, we share our joys and concerns before we focus on our Sunday school lesson. Today people in our community are going through times of suffering and grief. Think about the needs of those close to you and about your own needs and concerns. If you like, you can share them in the comments.
Today’s lesson is about the power Jesus has to heal our infirmities and to meet our needs. It is also about having faith, even when we don’t see the evidence right now. It’s the kind of faith Jesus looks for in his followers. The following brief prayer was posted on Luther Seminary’s Working Preacher website. It is by Dr. David Lose, a professor and pastor.
God of miracles, sometimes we are slow to believe in your power, even when your miracles occur all around us each and every day. Open our eyes to see and our hearts to believe. Amen.
Today's lesson is on John 4:46-54.
Good morning!
We're so glad you decided to join us today!
When we meet in person, we share any joys and concerns we might have together. Think about the past week. What prayer requests do you have? If you feel comfortable, you can share them as a comment on this post. When you are ready, use the prayer below, Pope Francis' Prayer for Peace, to get started.
Lord God of peace, hear our prayer!
We have tried so many times and over so many years to resolve our conflicts by our own powers and by the force of our arms. How many moments of hostility and darkness have we experienced; how much blood has been shed; how many lives have been shattered; how many hopes have been buried… But our efforts have been in vain. Now, Lord, come to our aid! Grant us peace, teach us peace; guide our steps in the way of peace. Open our eyes and our hearts, and give us the courage to say: "Never again war!"; "With war everything is lost". Instill in our hearts the courage to take concrete steps to achieve peace. Lord, God of Abraham, God of the Prophets, God of Love, you created us and you call us to live as brothers and sisters. Give us the strength daily to be instruments of peace; enable us to see everyone who crosses our path as our brother or sister. Make us sensitive to the plea of our citizens who entreat us to turn our weapons of war into implements of peace, our trepidation into confident trust, and our quarreling into forgiveness. Keep alive within us the flame of hope, so that with patience and perseverance we may opt for dialogue and reconciliation. In this way may peace triumph at last, and may the words "division", "hatred" and "war" be banished from the heart of every man and woman. Lord, defuse the violence of our tongues and our hands. Renew our hearts and minds, so that the word which always brings us together will be "brother", and our way of life will always be that of: Shalom, Peace, Salaam! Amen.
Today's lesson is on John 1:1-14.

Gathering Around the Word
Prelude Music Director Robert Senay ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL TO WORSHIP from Psalm 5 Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my sighing. Listen to my cry for help, My King and my God. In the morning, O Lord, You hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before You and wait. You are not a God who takes pleasure in evil. The wicked and arrogant cannot stand in Your presence. Bloodthirsty, deceitful men and women the Lord abhors. You, Most Holy God, destroy those who tell lies. But I, by Your great mercy, will come into Your house. Lead me, O Lord, in Your righteousness and make straight Your way before me. But let all who take refuge in You be glad and sing for joy. May those who love Your name rejoice in You always.
